Coquitlam is one the 21 municipalities that make Metro Vancouver, an area known for abysmal traffic congestion. The roads available are stretched to their capacity and cannot contain the rapidly growing city. The result is traffic snarl-up, time wastage, and emission of green gases.
Since time immemorial, the city of Coquitlam shares the road space with trains. Countless residents can relate to being late because of the time spent behind a train. Luckily, plans are underway to remedy the situation and have the train on its track especially in the junctions.
In the meantime, Coquitlam residents have to put up with the traffic delays and find other means of getting to work without using the roads. The Suburban City’s residents in most cases prefer to walk or bike using the many nature trails across the county. Below are some of the causes of traffic in Coquitlam and proposed ways of improving the situation.

Trains on the RoaD
Imagine having to share a road with a train? As impossible as it sounds, that’s the situation in Coquitlam, BC. It's bad enough to have traffic gridlock from the vehicles without having trains add salt to the injury. For many people in Coquitlam, waiting for the trains to pass, especially during rush hours, is one of the biggest grievances.
Proposed ImprovemenT
Residents of Coquitlam can now rest easy because in a few years the train and cars grid-lock will be a thing of the past. Designs are being put in place to separate the rail line from the road. The project will touch on Westwood Street and Kingsway Avenue as well as the overpasses at the Lougheed Highway.
Commuting CommunitY
Coquitlam is referred to as a bedroom community because most people sleep there, but they spend their working days elsewhere. Therefore during rush hours, there are more cars than the road can take causing serious gridlocks.
Nature Trails
A considerable number of people use nature trails to bike or walk to the nearest towns for work and other day-time related activities relieving the roads from overuse and at the same time, helping in preserving nature.
